View Full Version : Transition Towns
Basically just a question really, does anybody live in one and how is it working out?
The only one that I've actually heard of is Lewes (http://transitiontowns.org/Lewes.Lewes), maybe it was one of the first and that's why I've only heard of this one and it's currency of the Lewes pound.

Hi Jax.
The transition town concept/model/initiative was 'invented' by Totnes (Devon). See http://totnes.transitionnetwork.org They have their own Totnes Pound. I visited Totnes last Autumn as I'd heard lots about it but never been there & it is really into eco, fair trade, vegetarian/vegan and local produce type stuff AND not a plastic carrier bag in sight - a wonderfully alive and happening place! Also spoilt for choice there on the healthy (vegetarian etc) eating cafe type places. The olde worlde high street area had a mecca of health food type shops, including a health food store the size of a mini supermarket which I spent hours in! Quite a few RAW products for sale there. Having just had a look at the above website, it says there are now 265 worldwide transition initiatives, anything from cities, towns, villages to communities or just groups of like minded people that have stemmed from the Totnes model! Romsey (Hampshire town on your doorstep!) is a transition town. All 265 are listed on the website.
LOL I daren't tell you how many times I've travelled through Totnes and not stopped!!! :o:o:o Wll I know NOT to do that the next time I'm down that way.
Cheers for that CT, I'll try and do a bit more research on Romsey, I'm glad they are giving it a go, but haven't heard a bean about them doing this, and as you say they are virtually on our doorstep!
