Wanted to just add a thread here about Diabetes in case any visitors to the site didn't quite pick up on the connection between diabetes and raw nutrition that has proved a success with a couple of our members here (http://www.rawinuk.com/showthread.php?t=256).

I was further compelled to post after reading a report in The Sunday Telegraph (back in Jan) that stated 1 in 5 NHS hospital patients has diabetes which is "twice the proportion previously estimated"! A report will be out later this year that shows the "terrifying burden the diabetes epidemic is placing on Britain's population and crippling effect on NHS resources".

I'm stunned that lower limb amputations in diabetics has "doubled in the last decade to 5,000 a year"...........yet still know and meet people who disregard advice about their health and continue to drink and eat unhealthily........what on earth does it take to get the message through to people? :noidea: Some may consider me a tad harsh and that it's all very well to say that when I don't have diabetes, but I'm a strong candidate for it as it is in both sides of my family and I sufferred for many years with fluctuating blood sugar levels (since eating more raw foods these have stabilised), I considered these as warning signs and became determined not to develop diabetes ;)

Thanks for posting this Jax.

Diabetes really is much more dangerous than people think, if left untreated or not treated correctly then the complications that may develop are irreversible. to my knowledge you cant grow another set of legs or eyes.

My own journey was quite spectacular, going from Insulin dependant last June to No prescribed medications at all 5 weeks later.

All this whilst adopting a mostly raw diet. For me i chose (and still do) Alkalizing foods but the emphasis is very much on RAW fruits and veggies.

recently i fell off the wagon (as i do periodically, but less often) and found myself eating more and more western style cooked carbohydrates (bread, chips, crisps, pasta, chocolate).

My blood sugars responded with a gradual increase in the mornings until finally one morning it was 7.0mmols.

I was so shocked and disgusted with myself i immediately went back to Raw again. and my blood sugars again responded with beautiful 5.0mmols within 2 days. What a difference and whats more those readings are consistent.

even eating a lot of fruit during each day (i consume about 75 to 100g of carbohydrates each day in fruit and veggies and cooked beans) i am able to achieve stable blood sugars all of the time, it is only when i try to deviate away from the raw diet that things start to go awry.

I only wish the diabetic community forums would take this way of eating a little more seriously. the results are pretty amazing!

I completely agree with you there, and there you and Claire are, complete living proof, what more do they need??

I think it's an injustice that more information about raw nutrition isn't being disseminated amongst diabetic patients, let's face it, it's not exactly some newfound fad diet, voodoo or rocket science............just straight forward basic eating, that would proabably cost less than most are already spending on their food and medicine :noidea: Maybe you could add more to that Sharon, have you ever compared the costs at all?

I cant say i ever cost out the difference, however because of the sheer quantities of raw fruit and veg i am eating we are shopping 3 times a week for fresh groceries!
