I know this is going to be out of place[but I wasn't sure where to put this],
but does anyone have any advice on become a raw veganist whilst on a tighter student budget?

I think you might have difficulty buying organic spinach online. You need to look locally for fresh produce - try and find a local organic farm you can buy from. Try and get to your local farmers market, from there you might also be able to find farms you can buy from direct. See http://www.leicestershirefoodlinks.org.uk/index.php/leicester-market.html

I have a raw friend in Leicester, I'll let her know about this thread, she migth be able to help.

Here you go, the Leicester Vegetarian and Vegan Society (http://www.leicesterveggies.org.uk) - they meet once a month and have a few raw fooders who go there. (I gave a talk on raw food there once!)

Hi Naoko, one of the main aims for this site was to garner collective knowledge on where we can buy the products we want at the prices that we can afford. Everytime I see offers etc I try to post them on Raw in UK so others can benefit, so look around on here and if you find a cheaper price or discounts then please do post them. In addition haverawcake does discounts for members here from time to time too, you can find her shop here (http://www.rawinuk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=27).

Hi Naoko

I'm not a student but I had to give up work because of M.E. so I live on benefits which is also quite a tight budget. As far as equipment goes, I had basically a sharp knife and chopping board to start with. If you have a local freecycle group that can be a good place to trawl for juicers, blenders etc. Also try Ebay, it's often possible to get stuff fairly cheap there.

As far as food goes, well for the basics (fruit and veg), I like the farmer's market but since it's only here twice a month, I also use the supermarket. I get a lot of stuff delivered from Asda (they have some organic stuff) and I have a Lidl's nearbye - I use that too. I tend to buy whatevers on special offer (it's amazing what you can juice or turn into a smoothie) I buy frozen berries because they're cheaper at this time of year. I buy organic when I can but can't afford it all the time. I'm just incredibly fussy about apples as I've read that they harbour more pesticides than other fruit.

I buy nuts and seeds from the health food shop or online. I google and compare prices. There are also a some good Ebay shops. I grow my own wheatgrass and grow a lot of sprouts as they're really cheap. A packet of organic lentils will give loads of sprouts and they're really tasty and cruchy in salads and good in smoothies too. I got two sprouters cheap on Ebay.

I've also been lucky enough to get some books in local charity shops and second hand on Amazon. There's also some good free Ebooks around, try Kevin Gianni, Karen Fowler, Shazzie etc.

Hope this helps a bit. If there's anything in particular you want to know - just ask

I have an eye on that sea spaghetti it looks rather tasty. ^_^
Thanks for the link and I shall browse the forums more, aswell.

@Kirsteen:

I have a blender already since I used to make smoothies from time to time before, but I am contemplating on getting a juicer,so I will indeed look at ebay.

How do you find out about your freecycle group, what is a freecycle group?
I want to try and grow wheatgrass, since I heard of how much it can benefit the body especially low energy levels!

Thankyou for the advice!

Freecycle is where you can offer or request items for free! It's a way of recycling what you don't want and sharing with the community. The website is www.uk.freecycle.org although a few months ago some of the UK Frecycle groups split from the US organisation to become Freegle www.freegle.org.uk so if the Freecycle group in your area is quiet try Freegle.

Thankyou for the advice!Kirsteen posted about successfully growing her wheatgrass here (http://www.rawinuk.com/showthread.php?t=357) Naoko if you're interested.

There's a little thread here (http://www.rawinuk.com/showthread.php?t=229) about what people are using in their kitchens that may give you some ideas of what you'd like to find for yourself. Re the juicer, I bought a fairly cheap one back in 2003 and it's still going strong now, so you don't always have to search out top end products, although obviously in some cases it can pay off, so I make sure that I research my potential purchases thoroughly before making a decision http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

There's a good video on Youtube about growing Wheatgrass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOczBVR7vX4

and if you can't buy it locally, I've found this a good site for it http://www.wholisticresearch.com/shop/home/m/Shop/id/139/page/1/
