I try to use rechargeable batteries whereever possible, but sometimes you still end up with batteries, strange how they turn up like that, anyway........I keep them in a box after they've stopped powering their product and then re-use by 'cascading' them down to lower usage products, and then after that I've always been stuck as to no where to recycle them.
I did find that our local recycling centre does take them now at last (still think our authroity is poor for recycling!), and this week I noticed that Waitrose in Portswood, Southampton have started collecting them by the tills, the tubs aren't noticeable which is a shame, but look out for them and report back here where you find them ;)
