not sure if this is in the right section or not...
can anyone tell me what dried beans, lentils and peas can be eaten raw (after soaking)? i've been trawling the net, but cannot seem to find a comprehensive list.
I know of a few that are fine such as chickpeas and mung beans. I adore cooked black eyed beans, but not sure if they are safe to eat raw.... hmmm
can anyone help?

i am reading the thrive diet by brendan brazier (a raw vegan tri-athlete)
he has a section that gives a list of legumes that he likes to use.
beans
adzuki
black
chickpeas
fava
kidney
navy
pinto
lentils
brown
green
red
peas
black eyed
green split
yellow split
i am trialling sprouting a few at the moment. brown lentils sprout really quickly and i enjoy those on my salads. adzuki beans also sprout quickly.
i usually soak them for a few hours then rinse and drain them several times per day until they are edible. i like about 8mm tails on them before i eat them. just chew a small amount and if it tastes nasty spit it out and try again once its had more sprouting time.
sunflower seeds sprout exceptionally quickly, i'd say they are the fastest sprouters ive found so far.
i'm currently waiting for a batch of chickpeas to start growing the start of leaves before they become edible (to my taste anyway lol)
my next target is the peas family.
my goal is to become more and more raw. i eat a lot of mass produced hummous, if i can create a raw version i may have cracked it :)

Thank you so much!
Just to make sure, it's not essentail that I sprout the beans before eating them is it? I've not done any sprouting yet. i've got some soaked mung beans ready and waiting, perhaps i'll try a little experiment!

be very careful with the raw beans thing. you must NOT eat pulses before they have been soaked/sprouted you would poison your liver!!!!
do a taste test to see if you are happy to eat them, if they are bitter or nasty in any way dont eat them yet and give them longer sprouting time.

duely noted!
think I may stick to cooking beans and pulses for now before eating, and do a bit of experimenting with sprouting.

I'm currently sprouting some spelt. Since it's a type of wheat, can I grow it like wheatgrass for juicing? Or can it not be grown like that? Also, this may be a stupid question, I've got wheatberries but they look nothing like the wheat i got to grow wheatgrass - are they the same or are they totally different? any advice most welcome

i cant comment on the spelt i'm sorry.
ive read that wheatberries and wheatgrass are the same? again ive not played with sprouting my wheat berries.
to be honest as i'm gluten intolerant i'm a little nervous about trying it.
i found a nice recipe for essene bread made using soaked wheat berries. could be interesting.

Kidney beans are poisonous raw.
(You've got to be careful reading American books as some words have different meanings in the USA. I was reading on another forum how an American recipe called for yams. In the UK, what we call yams are poisonous raw, in the US yam is sometimes used to refer to a type of sweet potato, which are fine raw).
