View Full Version : Nut and Seed Butters
LOL whilst just helping out San on here I went on the Carley's Organic site as I have one of their Raw Almond Butters here, and I was amazed at their comprehensive list of raw nut and seed butters that they make! So I thought I'd share it with you all http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Carley's Organic Foods Link! (http://www.carleys.co.uk/pages/products.html)
And because I know there's some die hard homemade rawists out there, please do feel free to post some recipes for butters here ;) I've never made any before but have been assured it's easy!
I've just noticed that The Fresh Network also stock the Carley's range, so handy if you are buying something else from there too, and if you click on this link to Fresh Network* (http://www.rawaffiliate.com/cgi-bin/clickme.cgi?exec=Jax&site=site1) it will help to fund this site for next year too ;)
For those of you who live near Lymington, the health food shop at the top of the high street does a good range of Carley's nut and seed butters, including the notoriously elusive pecan, and a new cacao and almond one...and at competitive prices. As an aside they also had 3 types of OM bars which are a very smooth and fruity raw choc range for 1:99; white miso, which is quite hard to find; and coconut butter/oil in 200g jars for 3:49.
Here's a handy tip for making the butters, unfortunately it's been stored in my pc so long I can't remember where I saw it :rolleyes2:
"I use my vitamix for nut/seed butters all the time and I do not add any oil to them. the trick is to keep your nuts/seeds in the freezer so when you want to make butter they are super cold and will not heat up in the vitamix. Sometimes if I know something needs to blend a long time I put the vitamix container in the freezer too."

Sainsburys hedge end stock white miso, and a fair range of miso, seaweed although thats about it...mum & me have collard many a member of staff to complain at the lack of food....the look we get is...well....different!
bet they don't get that complaint all that often
I really do want to go to the health food shop in Lymington...BTW I found the farm shop a year or two back and LOVE IT:party0006::smexercise11:
thats me after a night in....who goes to pubs any more?
I prefer mixing it up in the comfort of my kitchen.....devout follower of the creative zen....that we are those chosen few...shining light into the dark cubist lives of those with out light.....
sunnyfields sell a bit of carleys butters & tahinni
where in Lymington is the health shop please Ruth?
i was in sainsbury badger farm the other day
i know this was for a stew and not raw
but just making a point here
they had a bag of organic and a bag of pesticide mixed veg.
the pesticide one cost 1 GBP
the organic one about 3GBP
the bit that annoyed me was
the pesticide one was half the size of the organic one
why couldnt they do them both the same size
i bet they would have sold just as many organic.
and i would have bought a smaller bag
instead i didn't buy either.
they really need to get their acts together.
i have the argument when Honor was growing up
i could have bought family packs of organic
but couldn't afford it.
now she is all grown up and i want single food
i can afford organic but i dont want a pack.
one courgette last me a week
i dont want 3!!!!.
Rant over
hope you are all having the best day ever

Ani... the health food shop in Lymington is at the top of the high street on the right; just keep walking up past the main body of shops and the church until you reach it!
Another brill place to go in Lymington for the most fantastic fresh produce is Warbourne organic farm shop just outside the town. I love their winter salad crops of mixed leaves....cheaper than any other bought leaves I've yet to find and really delicious. Also fantastic veg.

Ah we've been there too, brilliant products and very seasonal (they have some of the biggest veg I've ever seen) but don't go if you are looking for a big range of veggies http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Another great place in that area is Setley Vineyard and Farm shop (http://www.setleyridgevineyard.co.uk/wine-shop-brockenhurst.asp), they have a mouthwatering array of local foods http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Oh and here's a link for Warborne Farm (http://www.warbornefarm.co.uk/).
thanX for the info you rawsome ladies
i am on the hunt for some water down that way that i have an address for
so i will make a day of it at some point very soon.

Please can I come with you if you find a spring? I've always wanted to hunt for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Hm I'd be interested in coming too if possible, it would be fascinating to find a real spring.
of course how about next sat or sun
you do realise i have no idea where it is
and my lovely neighbour has already been dragged on 2 hunts with me :):):)
but i am sure we can find the one i am thinking of
how about making it a food day at your places as well if time.
probably water hunt first
then it will be dark and we can shop :):):)
i would like to do the samphire buckthorn and beet before it is too late
is that anywhere in the vicinity of New Forest?
i am back after a scurry around i cant find the address
for the spring in the new forest.
i will keep hunting and hopefully i will have it for tomorrow.
i have one for Dorset i will bring that address with me as well.

Re the person who is making nut/seed butters with the Vitamix, I'd be interested to know her technique.
I've tried making almond butter using a juicer, food processor, and Vitamix (both high and variable settings) and have never been able to make a 'butter' that comes anywhere near the amazing flavour and consistency of Carley's raw (whole) almond butter.
I'm assuming she's using the 'wet jug'.
EDIT - as I often do when reading such posts, I go out to the kitchen and have...one more try! Using both variable and high, I eventually got some butter that would 'pass' (although not like Carley's!), BUT I had to stop the machine around fifteen times to scrape down mixture stuck on the sides. Definitely too much of a faff.
Hi Debbie, good on you for trying http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Unfortunately before I started this site I used to just keep any tips and recipes etc on my pc without any references or idea of where I got them................because back then I never envisaged putting them on a site of any nature, so I can't even think where I saw it and help you find her to ask her questions http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon11.gif
Suffice to say if I see anything useful now, I make sure I have a link to post on here too http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
If it helps, I have found that I spend far more money trying to make my own inferior versions of nut/seed butters than if I buy a jar of Carley's!
They are the experts in this regard. When I lived in cornwall I knew some of the poeple who worked in the firm and they were so lovely that I would rather spend my money on their raw products than attempting to make my own again!
However if you want to combine nuts/seeds with vegetables for a pate, dip, spread etc a vitamix works well to combine and make a base for a spread. Just add something to your nuts!
