View Full Version : Natural Toothpowders
I think it was when we were away in Scotland (in the middle of nowhere!) when we ran out of our normal Kingfisher toothpaste, couldn't get it in any of the shops that were available to us, so we bought Eucryl powder as it seemed to have the least amount of weird substances in it. But it got me thinking that I remember when I was a kid we always used to have powder and now it's barely available. Which then got me thinking why on earth don't I start making my own natural healthier tooth powder :o
So I'm starting this thread in the hope that some of you may already have some good tried and tested recipes, and I'll post what I come across ;)
To kick things off, I've been reading that straight forward bicarb (baking soda (http://www.ehow.com/how_4464852_brush-teeth-baking-soda.html)in USA I think) is good as a cleaning and whitening agent, but many say it's probably not good for everyday use - here's a bit on how to use it (http://www.ehow.com/how_4464852_brush-teeth-baking-soda.html)for your pearly whites ;)
Here's a recipe from Granny's Recipes;
Sage Tooth Powder
A couple of handfuls of sage leaves
1 handful of sea salt
With a pestle and mortar grind the sage leaves into the sea salt. Bake in the oven until hard. Grind again into a fine powder. Put in a sealed jar and use instead of toothpaste.
Alternatively, rubbing sage leaves across the teeth cleanses them and sweetens the breath.
Mix 2 tbs sea salt with 3 tbs of bicarbonate of soda and use as a toothpaste.
Chew cloves to sweeten the breath.
Mint Mouthwash
½ tsp peppermint, dried
½ tsp thyme leaves, dried
½ tsp cloves, crushed
½ tsp nutmeg, grated
½ pint sherry
10 drops of oil of peppermint
Steep herbs in sherry for 7-10 days. Strain off herbs and add peppermint oil.

Strawberry Mouthwash
1/4 cup dried, or 1 cup fresh strawberry leaves
1 cup of boiling water
2 tsp of fresh lemon juice
Place the strawberry leaves in a ceramic bowl and pour the boiling water over them. Let sit until completely cool. Strain off the liquid and discard the leaves. Add the lemon juice and stir well. Store this mouthwash in the refrigerator.

We make our own:
powdered clay (various types, currently green clay, for the mnierals which are good for the teeth)
wheatgrass powder (minerals)
stevia powder (just added this, recently read that it kills the bacteria which causes gum disease)
peppermint essential oil (flavour)
tea tree essential oil (antiseptic)
Been using this for a year or so, works well.

MMMM that actually sounds quite tasty Rob :638:
HP = hydrogen peroxide 3% Food Grade (not the one in the chemist)
If anybody is interested I've found some 3% peroxide on The Fresh Network (http://www.rawaffiliate.com/cgi-bin/clickme.cgi?exec=Jax&site=site1)* although I noticed that for 8 fl oz (I think that equates to about 250ml), on their mailed price list the price was £7.50 and a link on their site it was £8.65, yet under the actual product before you put in your basket it is £9.50...............so I would assume the latter price!!
If you are a bit adverse to mixing your own powders etc, I've also noticed that Goodness Direct (http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk) stock Eco DenT Original Mint Naturally Effervescent Baking Soda Powder 56g "With our EZ-pour applicator lid, Eco-DenT makes it simple. Eco-DenT Toothpowders are easy to use, taste great, and leave your mouth feeling fresh and refreshingly tingly! Once you try it you'll never go back to toothpaste again." NB don't forget that there's an offer on if you are buying anything else off the site!!! (http://www.rawinuk.com/showthread.php?p=1261#post1261)
Bobby's Healthy Shop (http://bobbys-healthy-shop.co.uk/shop/category_Food%2520Grade%2520Hydrogen%2520Peroxide/Food-Grade-Hydrogen-Peroxide---Purest-Quality-and-Best-Value%21.html?shop_param=cid%3D%26) sell 3% peroxide in 500ml bottles for £10.20 P&P is currently £2.80 in the UK, comprehensive pdf of product information available here too. And the same price from Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (http://www.food-grade-hydrogen-peroxide.co.uk/shop/article_5/Food-Grade-Hydrogen-Peroxide-3%25---500ml.html?shop_param=cid%3D2%26aid%3D5%26)who also give more tips for uses.
:5386: (http://www.tipking.co.uk/tip/5048.html) And while searching for prices I came across this page - Peroxide for Earache (http://www.tipking.co.uk/tip/5048.html) there's quite an array of responses, mainly advocating it, and some saying it didn't work or made it worse but then of course we have no idea if they were doing it right or not in either case.
