View Full Version : Seaweeds
Whilst rooting around Google for Nama Shoyu I found the Japan Centre ( www.japancentre.com (http://www.japancentre.com/) ) :D
So not only did I buy the Nama Shoyu but I also bought some Wakame from their extensive range of seaweeds too (http://www.japancentre.com/?q=seaweed&cmd=search&shw=true&sno=1&scl=name&srt=&x=16&y=13).
A question came up about the different sea foods today at Rian's raw talk, specifically about the availability, so it would be really good if people could post here what seaweeds can be bought where and what prices they are so that it saves people shopping around ;)
spelling below is not good :):)
sea spaghetti - funky raw
Clearspring do arame, hijikike, dulse, sea salad, nori (not raw) - most health shops & supermarkets
Chang-yu http://rawfood.health.officelive.com/default.aspx - lots of really delish seaweeds
fantastic day today x

Wow, I only discovered Dulse last week when Rian gave me some at her home. It is my absolute favourite seaweed/vegetable.
People at work are fascinated by what I eat and I let them try the seaweed; they think it tastes like fish food! My Manager got a piece of Nori stuck to the roof of his mouth and couldn't get it out, LOL for me!!!:)
LMAO............well shouldn't laugh really eh :o It's the same when I'm at work Claire, they're all very interested and try bits out and then some will be polite, and others are just :9662: bleeuurrggh how can you eat that??? Erm because my palate has changed for the better ;)
I've just come across this website that sells fresh seaweeds..........I know we're an island but not everyone is close to the coast or has the time for foraging ;)
Buyseaweed.com (http://www.buyseaweed.co.uk/) - From the Beautiful Isle Of Bute on the west coast of Scotland, we hand cut fresh edible seaweed. On the north west shore of Bute, there are clear, clean, unspoilt waters where we harvest sea kelp, sugar kelp, kombu, wakame, channel wrack, spiral, dulse, sea lettuce and sea string. We also cut Bladder and serrated wrack seaweed which is used for skin care, spa detox and cellulite body wraps.
Free delivery on orders over £30, and you can also find some recipe ideas on the site.
Apparently researchers at Newcastle University have discovered that kelp and specifically alginate (a natural fibre in kelp) helps reduce fat uptake by over 75%.

hey guys and girls, been a while since i was around here ;)
I found myself eyeballing the seaweeds along the shore line at low water today whilst hubby and i were working.
I picked a handful of what looks to be ascophyllum nodosum (kelp) but now don't know what to do with it!
any tips or tricks would be gratefully received please!
Hey Sharon, good to see you again ;)
Karen should be able to help you out on that one http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Hi Jax
I have just used the Seaveg.co.uk. there are several seaweeds you can use. I liked the sea spice the best as the bits are small enough to add like you would add salt. It's not really spicy like indian spice just a hint of it I found but very useful nutritional addition.
The business does get its seaweed tested by local UNI. there is a seaweed centre that tells you exactly what nutrition you are getting. they do not have pollution problems on the west coast. they do test for isotopes apparently but none found.
Brilliant, thanks for that Jeni http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

We love seaweed in our house. We tend to get the Clearspring untoasted Nori, Arame and Wakame which are very popular with my children. The arame is great in salads and we tend to have wakame in Miso soup - great if you use unpasteurised barley Miso and add it to warm/hot (but not boiling) water and We also like Sea Spaghetti.
I have to say since joining Karen on her wildfood sea walks I have become a massive fan of sea beets, fat hen, rock samphire and sea kale, they have such amazing flavour and keep really well :1882: Have been adding them into salads and wraps.........oh and sneaking them into the lads foods too but shhh :victory:

Where can I get some seaweed to put in salads, is there anywhere on the high st? Health food shops or does it have to be ordered online? Does it need soaking/preparing before eating? I tried some already recently with my friend and it tasted good, kind of stringy, dark green, I have no idea what the name of it was lol

You can buy fresh seaweed in some health food shops - it will be in the fridge. I assume it is all raw, although I have contacted Bord-a-Bord which is the main one and that is definitely raw. Dried seaweed you don't know what temperature it has been dried at, although I tend not to worry about that too much.

We've just started selling a range of fresh seaweeds on Funky Raw. I absolutely love fresh seaweed, it's so much better than dried seaweed and like most things, fresh is better for you than dried, and also ours is 100% raw. We've got royal kombu (http://www.funkyraw.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=32&products_id=360) (my favourite), sea spaghetti (http://www.funkyraw.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=32&products_id=361), wakame (http://www.funkyraw.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=32&products_id=363)and dulse (http://www.funkyraw.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=32&products_id=362). All the frsh seaweeds come in biodegradable, compostable packets. Plus we have a selection of dried seaweeds. http://www.funkyraw.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=32
