I've read some stories of how raw nutrition has really helped with cancer and even to the point of ridding themselves of it. Does anybody know of anybody that has managed to do this at all?

I have a friend who is struggling with many cancers but I'm not sure of the best way to wade in and start spouting about nutrition, especially when her dietician has said she could do with putting more weight on and start eating chips!!! :eek: :rolleyes: I think that's quite irresponsible myself and if that's what being said by health professionals then no wonder the country is struggling with poor health!!

If anybody is interested I saw a letter about a woman that has written an ebook on natural therapies for cancer, you can find it at natural therapy solutions (http://naturaltherapysolutions.co.uk/) when you click through it shows you 3 other books, but Carol Roberts' one 'I Beat Cancer' looks to be free - I've never read the book, so if anybody has please post a review for it here ;)

I read a very inspiring story in Get Fresh (http://www.rawaffiliate.com/cgi-bin/...Jax&site=site1)* how Janette Murray-Wakelin from Canada beat cancer through raw food nutrition and taking wheatgrass juice which goes 'directly to the bloodstream, oxygenating the blood and the whole body', which Janette explains that she knew was a vital factor in stopping the mutation of her cancer cells and had learnt from her extensive research.

"When Janette was diagnosed with highly aggressive carcinoma breast cancer over six years ago, she was given six months to live. The tumour was three centimetres and the cancer had spread into the chest wall and the lymph nodes. It was recommended that she undergo conventional chemotherapy and radiation treatment, which she was told may possibly extend her life a further six months."

Janette was already eating 'healthily' when her cancer was discovered, as she had eliminated meat and dairy, and had never eaten junk food. So she found for her moving to 100% raw food and juicing, eliminating the odd muffin, sandwich, pasta and stir fried vegetables, was really easy and gave her fantastic results;

"Within the six months Janette had been told by doctors was her maximum expected lifespan, she received a clean bill of health. There was no longer any sign of cancer cells in her body. At that point, she came off the immune therapy regime, but has continued with all other aspects of her raw lifestyle."

My father (who's birthday it is today..he would have been 78) did eventually die from a very agressive cancer, BUT he had a year more life (and good quality meaningful life where he saw his son engaged and married, and his daughter survive and start recovering from years of bed bound illness) simply by engaging more with the information we were starting to research about raw food and supplementation. particularly apricot kernals.

He had a huge tumour on his back which vanished in a month after we started him on apricot kernals, and tweaked his already good diet. The medics didn't have a clue to what was happening with that tumour!! He went into the hospice and was dying 6 years ago last January...we were all called and stayed with him. it was my first trip out in over 10 years and I was so glad to be able to go there!! However my amazing Dad rallied, and like I said, lived a whole year more!!! The hospice staff had never seen anything like it (he visited once a week for them to make sure he was still going, and called him, " The Lazarus Lad!") Even though his cancer never went into remission during that year and he was never expected to make it through with such an agressive form, I feel that for us it proves that whatever stage you are doing cancer, even terminal..you CAN improve your lot and live to see much more than you would have if you hadn't taken some responsability for your health. Actually, and I don't mean this morbidly...if you do have terminal cancer like my Dad, you can decide to take responsability for your death. You can always do something for your body and your mind..even just think beautifully about it....it will heal itself in part even approching death. One day someone will prove that.

One of the first times I remember coming across juicing as a form of cancer treatment was on, of all things, Grand Designs in about 2002-03, where the house owner was suffering a form of cancer and the couple, Phillip and Angela had decided to follow the natural route which included an eco build (hence it being on Grand Designs) and they were juicing madly to fight his cancer.

I'd love to know what programme of treatment they were following so will try and find out about them if possible, but in the meantime if anybody is interested, there's a link here about juicing;

This extract is taken from Tonya Zavasta's Beuatiful on Raw Blog March 27th 2009 and I think presents a very balanced view of the use of raw food nutrition in treating cancer. It really isn't a case of just simply switching over to the raw gourmet gorging that we may feast our eyes on in the glossy recipe books to beat cancer...........as lovely as it all looks (and for most they can devour an amount of these delectable dishes) those who suffer conditions still need to keep an eye on what they are ingesting and how it affects the condition.

"Research in recent years has discovered that cancer cells can only thrive in a low oxygen, high acid environment. Hard as it is for some to fathom, not all raw foods are cancer-fighting. The talk I attended by the blood analysist Ruth Daber (http://www.energiseforlife.com/wordpress/2009/10/30/live-blood-analyst-ruth-daber-uk-eu/) prompted me to post about the alkalising principle and cancer. Ruth stressed the importance of getting our bodies into a more alkaline state to prevent disease occurring. The slides she showed ups of the state of blood one hour after eating meat were for me the thing that brought it home........you just can't argue that their altered state does not look good and being so coagulated so soon after consuming acid forming meat, was quite shocking really.

The raw fooders on this site have had a bit of a discussion in this thread (http://www.rawinuk.com/showthread.php?t=308) about what foods are considered alkaline or acid forming. There are many factors that need to be noted and therefore forms many different approaches, hence some discrepncies between people, but the main fact remains that the ideal environment for optimal health is akali.

Cancer Active (http://www.canceractive.com/cancer-active-page-link.aspx?n=2733) have a useful rule of thumb for this approach to treating cancer, they include 3 major biochemical reasons to alkalise:
Energy Efficiency - Immune boosting - Candida preventing

I actually was so impressed with raw food as a way to manage my health problems that I qualified as a nutritionist. As part of that one of the books I read was The China Study.

The China Study in a nut shell promotes a high carb, low protein and low fat diet through clinical trials. But when you actually read the book and understand it, it actually means a low animal fat, low animal protein and high fibre diet. It promotes the eating of plenty of natural plant based foods, raw where possible. And is utterly against all the processed carbs such as sugars, pastas, white breads etc.

If you wanted to gift your friend something that would help, I can't recommend this enough.

There is a whole chapter on cancer, as well as mentions throughout the book. They have conducted clinical trials on animals, which is something I did struggle with, but this is a fabulous book full of studys that PROVE that a dairy free, meat free, sugar free, refinded foods free diet is really the way forward.

the Johanna Budwig diet (http://cancertutor.com/Cancer/Budwig.html) for ridding the body of cancer has been studied and developed by Dr Johanna Budwig.
she is a german scientist who saw results over and over again when her patients follwed her strict diet, namely alkalising foods, no animal products at all, and taking doses of flaxseed mixed with cottage cheese.
the flaxseed emulsifies when mixed with the cottage cheese making it water soluble.
the cottage cheese is an important sulphur donor which means that the molecules of the flaxseed oil are able to transport themselves into the cells of the body where they are needed. the flaxseed carries sunshine to your cells in this way.
many diseases are aided by taking the johanna budwig flaxseed oil diet, diabetes, cancer, fibromyalgia, arthritis, basically any disease that is inflammatory in the body.

it tastes pretty yummy too, kind of like a fromage frais.

Just been reading this cancer survivor's story (http://www.canceractive.com/cancer-active-page-link.aspx?n=1401&Title=Beata%20Bishop%20-%20Beating%20Cancer%20With%20Food), it's centred around the Gerson Therapy which has fantastic results, but actually tells you how difficult doing the treatment can be in the sense that we are living in a far more toxic environment than Dr Gerson himself lived in back in the 1920's.
