View Full Version : Especially for Karen - Durian Seeds!
Ha ha seeing as you were saying how you'd love fresh Durian the other week.....................how about growing your own? ;) :D Or maybe some Mangosteen, or cashews or a LongKong............I have no idea what one of those is but it sounds reeeeally interesting!!! :o
Lots of Thai Seeds Link! (http://www.simply-thai.com/Thai-Market-exotic-thai-fruit-seeds-index.htm)
And a cute little tale about Durian! (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/expat/4193933/In-praise-of-the-delectable-durian.html)
When we went to Australia, the local Woolworths in this ordinary, small suburb outside Sydney,(which is a proper supermarket, not like our poor old Woolies sellimng plastic tat) anyway, they have the most fantastic fresh fruit and veg and in the fruit section they were selling durian.
Of course I bought one, having always wanted to try one.... and was surprised at the size of the seeds! I was going to bring them back to have a go at planting them but the smell got a bit much.
I quite liked it but I have to say that the smell was a bit on the "ripe" side!
I've only got the freezed dried version.........even that is quite whiffy, but manageable!

Durians grown on trees, but, even if you have the seeds....a durian tree won't grow in the UK. (At least, I'm assuming that's where you people live - if not, lucky you!).
However, you might get little plants, which would be a novelty if nothing else.
I've got two small indoor plants in the kitchen right now, grown from a mango stone and a papaya seed.
If anyone would like fresh durian, ethnic supermarkets in large towns and Chinatown, Soho, are the best places. My friend Harley (aka durianrider of 30Bananas) tells me these are heavily sprayed and disgusting in various ways, but...after spending two weeks with him in Thailand recently and tasting organic tree-ripened durian, I'm going to have to say (sshhh....don't tell him) that there's not actually much difference in taste....they're all good!
LOL just got to post this as a funny!! ;)
I'd had some freeze dried durian lurking about and thought I'd stick them in my smoothie the next day, but thought it would work better if I rehydrated what was left. Anyway, such as my life, it took around 4 days for me to get to use them so they'd been in the fridge which is by the boiler and gas/electric meters.
My youngest very worriedly told me that he'd been smelling gas for the last day or two and seemed to be around the fridge area.........so me thinking 'OMG not another flaming problem to sort' started sniffing around..................ermmmm and then clicked that it was the Durian that he smelt every time he opened the fridge, so I reassured youngest, who is now completely and utterly put off Durian for life!!! http://www.rawinuk.com/images/icons/icon11.gif
Rob do you know why it's difficult to get hold of freeze dried durian in the UK at the moment? There's seems to be plenty of frozen about but not freeze dried so couldn't really work it out IYSWIM.

Could be because the only importer I know - my friend Chang-Yu - isn't in business right now.
PS Remind me what IYSWIM means - only been foruming for ten years and I'm stumped!
